Essay: What the causes of the Vietnam war are.
US History
12-3-13
The Vietnam war started because the US had personal interest and thoughts that the war would create economic problems. The Vietnam war involved the US, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, France, and Cambodia. This war was somewhat necessary because Vietnam didn't pose a threat to the US, the war would cause deaths, and it would spread communism. These are all causes for the Vietnam war to start.
One of the reasons why the Vietnam war was somewhat necessary was that Vietnam didn't pose a threat to the US directly. This shows that we didn't have a reason to want to attack Vietnam. A quote from president Johnson says "I don't think it's worth fighting for and I don't think we can get out." (Johnson) This shows that people in the US didn't see Vietnam as a threat and didn't want to send Americans to die in war. This quote is convincing because it came from the president and even he doesn't want to go to war because he doesn't think that Vietnam is a threat.
Another reason why the Vietnam war was somewhat necessary was that the war would kill a lot of people. This makes a lot of people not want war because even though the enemy is dying so are our people. A quote from president Johnson says "It's the biggest damn mess that I ever saw" ... "And what the hell am I ordering them out there for?" (Johnson) This shows that some of the US doesn't want to go to war because it would cause people to die. This convincing because nobody wants to have anybody die and it is said by the president. Another way to show this is when the Tet Offense happened. This was a surprise attack against the US and South Vietnam troops. This shows that North Vietnam will stop at nothing to get control and this makes the US see that they can be a potential threat.
Another reason why the Vietnam war started was because the US feared the spread of communism. North Vietnam wanted to expand and to spread communism throughout other countries. The US feared this because communism could become a a major power and would continue to spread. This was a problem to the US because if communism spreads it would destroy foreign trade and destroy our relations in other countries. The leader of North Vietnam had started to use guerilla warfare to try to get control of South Vietnam. This type of warfare was bad in this war because anybody could be a combatant and this type of warfare was used to ambush and take out troops fast. The Geneva Accords helped the stopping of the spread of communism. This created the demilitarized zone at the 17th parallel. Nobody was supposed to pass along this line and it wouldn't be controlled. This helped the stop of the spread of communism because this made North and South Vietnam back out of that region and it held back the spreading. North Vietnam broke that truce and went through this parallel and invaded South Vietnam and this caused the US to get involved to stop the spreading of communism.
This war was somewhat necessary because North Vietnam didn't pose as a threat but if we didn't stop them communism would spread and people would die. The US got involved in the Vietnam war because the US had personal interest. These are reasons why the US got involved in the Vietnam war.
